Gay Straight Alliance is a club run by Mrs. Eshbach who has been teaching at HAHS since March of 2016 but has been a teacher for about 26 years. She teaches Video communications 10th grade English and 12th grade English. The GSA club was made in 2017. She started this club because when she came to Hamburg, she noticed there was not a GSA club like there had been in every other school she worked in and decided to start it.
GSA often has many fundraisers throughout the year. This year they decided to hold a Christmas fundraiser selling candy cane grams. These will be candy canes with paper tied to them with a meme and a space to write. There will be members of the GSA club selling candy cane grams to students during lunches A and B from December 9-16 for two dollars. They will be delivered to students’ homerooms on December 18.
Students who are receiving a candy cane gram will get it in their homeroom and they will be delivered by either Landon Poulios dressed up as Santa or Serenade Dampman dressed as an elf. GSA is doing this to bring a little more cheer to their fundraiser and to make it more eventful when receiving a candy cane gram to hopefully make it worth the money. GSA plans to use the money they make from the candy cane grams to fund any fun activities they are planning like the costume contest they held during halloween. They need the money to continue giving out fun prizes to students who win. They also plan to use the money to do more fun things like candy cane grams and are already making plans for the future.
The idea to sell candy cane grams was heavily inspired by the movie Mean Girls. Specifically the Mean Girls scene where Daniel Franzese dresses up as Santa and delivers candy cane grams to students with a jolly spirit.
The GSA hopes to capture this good spirit and make memories delivering candy cane grams to their fellow students. Everyone at GSA is excited to hand out the candy cane grams they have worked hard on.
