The Esther Ludwig Scholarship has been offered to HAHS seniors for nearly two decades, starting with the graduating class of 2006. Since then, the scholarship has awarded millions of dollars. Ludwig was born in Shoemakersville and lived a very involved life. She enjoyed bowling, dogs, and racehorses. The Esther Ludwig Scholarship Committee is composed of many people who knew her personally and wanted to continue her legacy. This scholarship is devoted to education and helping people afford it. Seniors qualify for the scholarship by having a cumulative unweighted GPA of 80-100%. The money can be put towards a four-year college or a trade school. Eligible seniors received a packet with all of the necessary information in their homeroom.
Mrs. Wyles-Herbert, a school counselor at HAHS, is the point of contact for distributing information on this scholarship. She is also a member of the committee that reviews applications along with other community members. Mrs. Wyles-Herbert says “The community is so blessed that a community member like Ludwig would take her wealth and invest it years later in the community.” It is a wonderful opportunity that many other schools do not have. If there is one thing that she can recommend to students it is to learn more about Ludwig. Knowing who she was and where this money came from may help students appreciate and understand her generosity. She adds, “The Esther Ludwig Scholarship is an ongoing significant gift to the community that is very special.”
Juliette Buckwalter is a senior at HAHS who is going through the application process. She says that it is going well and the meetings that the counselors put together are very helpful. It gives her a space where she will be able to work on it and ask for help if needed. The guide and step-by-step instructions included in the packet make the process easier. Juliette says she thinks this scholarship is a very good opportunity. It is nice that hardworking students are offered this scholarship and she is very thankful since other schools do not have scholarships like this. Juliette heard about the Esther Ludwig Scholarship in Mrs. Herman’s class since she was telling all the eligible seniors that they should definitely apply. This scholarship will help Juliette because she knows she is going to college and it will help her pay for her education.
