Alexis Freeland is a student at Hamburg Area High School who is involved with many extracurricular activities at school like sports or clubs that help the school community. One that she is involved in the most would be with the school’s choir with Mrs. Jackson during days 2, 4 and 5 in flex. “I like choir because I like to sing and I like my music teacher. Mrs. Jackson supports me with every endeavor I do, and it’s a comfortable space to be yourself and also hang out with the people around you to sing.”
Alexis is also involved with the school’s musical, Wizard of Oz, as the stage crew’s costume manager, along with Evangeline Kern. “I like helping with the musical because it allows me to express my great creativity with the costumes.” She adores helping people with the costumes and outfits, and she loves being able to organize the costumes in alphabetical order and making sure everything is in the correct space. “Handling costumes is interesting because I get the costumes together and help people in the musical with huge roles get ready for their next scene.” Her biggest motivation to do what she does for both musical and choir are Mrs. Jackson, Mr Dusko, and her best friend Lilly Gibson. “All three encourage me to do my best. Mr. Dusko helps me stay organized with the musical as it’s going, and Mrs. Jackson always has a positive attitude with everyone and encourages me to keep trying with everything I do. Lilly Gibson always makes sure I know exactly what I am doing and what I’m supposed to do, so I’m never lost.” When she is not busy with costumes, she likes to be able to watch the show from backstage. Watching the show is a way to keep her reminded of what costumes she needs to prepare next.
If Alexis were to do one thing, she would encourage everyone to do choir. “The choir room is always a comfortable environment.” Alexis also thinks choir is something different and fun and that singing is something everyone should try at least once. “I’d also encourage people to do musicals. It’s something different. It’s like a huge group project: Everyone has to do their part.” She believes that both musical and choir are great ways for people at Hamburg Area High School to express themselves, and says that the atmosphere in both is never daunting, but reassuring and peaceful.
