On October 10, 2024 people on the eastern side of America could see the northern lights from their households.
High school student Bethany Stufflet got a glimpse of the lights on Thursday. She had originally heard of the event the night before, but before she could see them, she had forgotten. She had realized that she missed the lights after many of her fellow students were posting on social media about how beautiful the lights were. At the time, she was baking cookies with her friend, and as she found out the news, both she and her friends were devastated that they missed a once in a lifetime opportunity. After a while, she found out from another friend that the lights could be seen again at 10:30 pm. She and her friend went out right around 10:30 and could not see the lights too clearly with their eyes, but their cameras picked up a beautiful array of colors. Bethany felt that seeing the northern lights a little bit was a “once in a lifetime experience.”
High school student Molly Fox on the other hand did not get to see the lights at all. She had no idea that the event was happening and only found out through social media. When she found out, it was too late which really made her sad.
High school teacher Mrs. McCarthy got to view the lights for the whole night with her family and German exchange teacher. She found out from her husband Mr. Wright as he called her to tell her to look outside. When she went outside, she was amazed by the sight of green, blue, purple, pink, and red in the sky. Since at the time Mrs. McCarthy was hosting a German teacher, Swantje Rowoid, she gave her the option to stay outside or to go inside and relax. She ended up choosing to stay outside. They stayed outside for about four hours and ended up getting to see the whole sky evolve throughout the night.
Overall seeing the northern lights was a very cool experience for many people, but for some people it was a very big loss not being able to see it.
