Evangeline Kern or better known as Evie, is a music affiliated student at Hamburg Area High School. Evie is a sophomore at the high school and plays the cello, viola, and a little bit of piano. Evie started playing the cello in her early elementary years but stopped for a couple years before picking it back up again. This year, Evie is extremely excited to start playing again. Aside from instruments, she is also in three voice affiliated music groups. These include the school’s choir, the Tri-M music club, and Trebles. All three of these groups are run by Mrs. Jackson, the vocal teacher at the high school. Evie says, “I really enjoy having a small group of close friends near me who sound amazing,” and also said she quite enjoys being able to do something with her friends.
According to Evie, all of the music groups she is in are extremely accepting and welcoming to newcomers. “The opportunities to give back to the community and be recognized as a music student,” said Evie when talking about the vocal groups directly. One of Evie’s biggest motivators for music is feeling like she belongs. Despite the main reason for each group being about music, Evie said that she found a lot of people who shared the same interests, including TV shows and brands. A huge help for Evie is her choir teacher, Mrs. Jackson and her viola teacher, Mrs. Godek. “I love both of them and are so friendly and fun to be around,” said Evie. Vocal groups and instrument groups are a great way for a student to reach out and explore what opportunities are around them. Evie would 100 percent reccomend of others to join these groups. “Yes! The music industry is so wide and accepting and there is such a large variety of different instruments that almost everyone can play something. Every one of them sounds so different and unique, and they are so many to be loved and played. Music is also a great way to express yourself with emotions or feelings or just wanting to express yourself,” said Evie.
Apart from being in music groups, Evie is also involved in the SADD club, Leo club, and is a member of the stage crew. So far, Evie has really enjoyed these experiences and think they are a great way to meet new people.
Even if someone is not born the next Motzart or Beethoven, they can find and create a spot for themselves in the music world with perseverance and self-esteem.
