Senior Amelia Gassert played an amazing game on October 1 during the tennis counties championship match held in Muhlenberg, winning 6-2, 6-2. She also played a memorable game, winning the district championship on October 12 at the Hershey Racquet Club. The final match was 6-0 and 6-3. She has been looking forward to both of these amazing wins forever. Her mother used to play tennis and got her into it. Mia has played tennis since she was 11 years old and even quit field hockey to continue to play. She has dedicated a lot of her time to playing and loves the sport.
Gassert says, “I just did it for fun in the beginning, and then I realized how much I loved the sport and how far I could go if I practiced consistently all the time. I have this coach from the Racquet club, and he has coached me for five years, and he is the one person who helps me through everything in tennis.”
Amelia says winning both championships was a very proud moment for her, her coaches, and her teammates. She says it feels really good that she made it so far since she has worked really hard in her past four years of high school to make it happen.
About both the championship matches, Gassert said they were both very stressful, and she felt very nervous. Gassert emphasized, “I normally feel okay during matches, but I knew I really wanted to win really bad.” She said she just stayed focus and ended up doing what she dreamt of since her freshman year.
Gassert states, “Any advice I would give to a student athlete is that even if you have a setback, it does not mean that it is the end of your career. There is so much room for improvement and you can always overcome your battles.”
