Hamburg Area High School tries its best to find willing students to help host Germans every year. We host these students through a program called GAPP (German American Partnership Program). This year we have been lucky enough to find enough homes for many Germans. We were even able to find a family willing to host a student for the entire year! There are many things that differ from country to country, so stuff may come as a surprise for some of these exchange students.
Our year long German exchange student, Laurin Eichler says that Hamburg is cool, but it can not compare to what he is used to back at home. He thinks that the food is better in Germany. “Classes out here are easier, but the teachers seem to be nice for the most part.”
Overall, it is clear to see that Germans do certain things much differently than Americans, but they still seem to be enjoying the experience. Although, such big transitions are known to be very difficult and stressful, so it is important to try to make these students feel as welcome as possible. In order to do that, start a conversation with them, say hi and wave to them, show them around new places, and more. Hamburg Area High School would like to keep this program going on as long and as often as possible, so take it into your hands to welcome the Germans, as well as show that you have enjoyed the experience yourself.
