Unfortunately for many students at Hamburg Area High School their fall sports seasons are coming to an end. Many athletes have had terrific seasons and cannot believe it is almost over. The students have reported that the fall sports season tends to seem to go by so much faster than any other sport.
Many teams have continued their sport to postseason and playoff games. The sports teams or players from Hamburg Area High School who have made it to districts are Amelia Gassert for tennis, the girls soccer team, the girls field hockey team, and Erica Gerner for girls golf.
Senior Amelia Gassert went to the District III 2A singles Championship and won first place. She also went to the BCIAA championship the prior week and won singles and got second place in doubles. Amelia Gassert has had an amazing season and high school career. Going to playoffs often and winning most of her matches.
Erica Gerner participated in the District III 2A tournament and placed 3rd overall. Erica has also had a terrific season and career at Hamburg. She is one of the very few girl golfers the school has and has really come to shine despite the few participants.
The girls field hockey team made it to districts and counties this year. The past two years they have come just short of reaching districts, and now they have qualified for both. The girls played the state champions on Monday October 15, and unfortunately lost 4-0. Most of the girls were proud of how they played since last time they played Oley they lost 10-0. Senior Kaeli Cox says “We have come a long way since my Freshman year, and I do not think Oley was expecting that score.” The girls are set to play Lancaster Country Day first round for counties and are a little nervous since they are ranked 2nd in the state.
The girls soccer team made districts after an outstanding season. Their goalie Shelby Dougherty reached 100 goalie saves for the season which is a huge milestone. The girls have built a great team and are well connected on the field. They are very unselfish and use each other the best they can. The girls play Wyomissing first round of districts and are a little on edge. They have yet to beat Wyomissing this season, but have high spirits going into the game. Many players have said “Since it is a playoff game, we expect everyone to have high energy and a more competitive attitude.
