Lilly Gibson – 10
The movie Twisters directed by Lee Isaac Chung came out on July 19, 2024, is a standalone sequel to the 1996 movie Twister. In this movie, Kate Carter, who is played by Daisy Edgar-Jones is suddenly brought back into the storm chaser life by her old friend Javi, who is played by Anthony Ramos. Five years beforehand, Kate, Javi, and three other individuals were storm chasers. One of the three friends was also Kate’s boyfriend at the time, named Jeb. Kate, Jeb, and the two other friends all chased an EF5 tornado to test out one of Kate’s ideas. Quickly, the tornado switched directions and headed towards them. In the destruction of the tornado, Jeb and the two other friends died, leaving just Kate and Javi. After the tornado, Kate gives up the chaser life and starts to work for NOAA in New York.
Five years later, Javi reaches out and asks Kate to start chasing him again. He claims to have a plan to attain a 3D model of a tornado, scanning everything about it perfectly. After some thinking, Kate agrees but only says she will stay for a week. Once she is back in tornado country, Javi, his team, and Kate run into Tyler Owens, an internet star who chases tornadoes for views. He is played by Glen Powell. As the movie goes on, Kate and Tyler get closer and discover things about each other. At the end of the movie, an EF5 like before hits the town she is staying at and she has to find a way to help the people with the assistance of Tyler.
I really like the first movie, Twister, so when this movie came out, I just had to see it. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, finding it to be action packed but also comical. Kate’s backstory played a huge part in the movie, and I think that is what made it so interesting. As well as being a fan of the first movie, I am a fan of Glen Powell in general. The movie had some romance scenes but most of it was based on the story of Kate and tornados which is what I like a lot about it. The special effects in the movie were not all completely special effects. While filming Lee ISaac Chung used real materials to create the storms. He used two engine jets, 10,0000 gallon dump tanks of water, and water cannons to create a “real” storm. Obviously, there were some special effects like the lightning, flooding, and the people flying away but for the most part the storms were man made. Anyone who likes action, jokes, and an underlying romance would definitely like this movie.
