Publications is a HAHS elective that allows students to write articles, work on the yearbook, and learn important factors of journalism. Two students that decided on this course for the 2024-2025 school year are Jordan Cunkle and Kaitlyn Gallagher.
Kaitlyn said that the main reason she chose the elective was because of one of her friends who was hyping the class up. “I decided to take publications because one of my friends was hyping it up so much and because it sounds like a fun class to take,” said Gallagher. So far this year, students have written one article and turned in one journalism based assignment. Kaitlyn’s article was about what sophomores did for their summer vacations. “The easiest part of writing an article was going through the trial and error of it all because it taught me how to write the articles properly,” said Kaitlyn. The hardest part of writing the article was remembering the grammatical aspect of it, including indenting, capitalization, and changing the format for the second copy.
Jordan Cunkle, who also took publications, wrote an article about the sophomore’s favorite genre of music. “My favorite part of writing an article was choosing my topic,” said Cunkle. Music was always something that Jordan connected with so being able to write about something she loves was an awesome opportunity. Jordan’s reason for joining the class was because of how it sounded. “I wanted to join in my first year but didn’t, so I’m glad that I finally decided to take it,” said Cunkle.
The two students are looking the most forward to the yearbook. Working the yearbook can be a taxing job but the outcome is always nice. Both Kaitlyn and Jordan are business managers, which means that they take care of the money regarding the yearbooks and supplements. Kaitlyn does a lot of the online stuff while Jordan focuses on the paper copies. “I’m excited to try something new and have a class period with my friends,” said Gallagher.
