College football has begun and is in full swing. The season officially started on August 24, week zero, with almost every team playing sometime in the following week. There are definitely high expectations for some teams, especially if they have switched conferences this year. Some teams on the other hand, are expected to either be the same as last year, or improve. New this year to college football is an added 12 team playoff. “It will be nice to see more than the same few teams have a shot at winning it all, every year,” said Brady Breininger. This will also allow some teams in the first round of playoffs to host the game at their home field, instead of neutral sites. Bowl games will also happen during the team playoffs. This will definitely make college football much more exciting with this addition.
Expectations are certainly high for this season with teams in new conferences. Most of the usual contenders for the championship will still come out of either the Big 10 or the SEC. Those two conferences definitely have some dominating teams in them. The Big 12 and the ACC, however, seem to be wide open in the sense of doing well this season. When looking ahead to the end of the season there is always the Heisman trophy winner. “There doesn’t seem to be one player that sticks out to be better than the rest,” said Brady. It is also very early to decide who gets this certain award at the end of the season.
Last year the winner of the college football championship was the Michagan Wolverines. This year it looks like the Georgia Bulldogs might have a good chance at winning it all. Georgia also has one of the best coaches in college football right now. Kirby Smart is a two time champion with the bulldogs, and if they would win this year, it would be his third win with them. This is definitely a team that people would want to see make it to the end. Another team that has a really good chance of winning is the Oregon Ducks. They played really amazing last year. Oregon just entered the Big 10 from the Pac 12. This move should allow them to advance even farther this year.
Penn State is looking really good this year, especially offensively. Penn State did just hire a new offensive coach, Andy Kotelnicki, so that is going to have a big impact on the season. The defense looked good as always too during their first couple games. Returning quarterback Drew Allar is coming off of his sophomore year and is looking to be an amazing part of the offense as well. James Franklin, the head coach is going into year 11 with Penn State. It will be very exciting to see how all the teams do in the upcoming weeks.
