When changing school buildings, it can be a bit scary for the freshman class. It is not meant to be, but maybe if the students knew what differences to expect, it would make it a bit easier to transition. There are so many differences from middle school to high school. One big difference is that classes are mixed with all different grade levels. This is most common in electives, but can also happen in core classes.
Another big change at the high school is lunch. Lunch is broken down into two lunches. Some students have lunch A and others have lunch B. This is dependent on a student’s 6th period class. Lunches are also mixed among grades. In cafe one there are freshmen and sophomores, and in cafe two there are juniors and seniors.
“The biggest difference for some kids was the locker size,” said Ana Smith. The lockers at the high school are much smaller than the ones at the middle school, but there is a compartment at the top of the lockers to put binders and other things in.
Another difference is the workload and grades. Students are expected to do the work when given and turn it in on time. Grades are also super important just like they are at the middle school. At the high school students have flex, just like at the middle school except there is only one. The flex time of the day is the 8th period, at the end of the school day.
The last major difference is new teachers and class sizes. The sizes of classes can range from one to ten students to 20 or more. This all depends on how many students take a certain course. At the high school, students are always going to have new teachers because of taking new classes.
