On December 15 of this year, the new live action Wonka movie starring Timothée Chalamet came to theaters. Starring Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka, this movie acted as a spin off of the original Wonka movies. Previous movies include Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Both movies focused on kids being invited to the chocolate factory and getting a tour of the factory. The older movies also had a secret plan in which the kids would be competing to win the factory without ever knowing they were actually competing. The new Wonka movie focuses on Willy Wonka’s journey leading up to building his factory and starting his dream business. There were a lot of special effects that mainly dealt with chocolate and the oompa loompas. The costumes were colorful and creative, with a nostalgic reference to the other Willy Wonka movies. Without spoiling too much, I can say that I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the songs were good and the story was also very good. It gives some more insight into life before Wonka was famous, and it has some funny moments to lighten the mood. My favorite part of the movie was the oompa loompa.
Sophomores Tia Adam, Jaden Ryan, and myself attended the opening night of the movie at the Hamburg Strand, senior Cadence Jalbert also went. Tia said that she did not enjoy it that much, and Jaden was not a fan of the songs. However, Cadence and I enjoyed the movie. At the end of the movie, Cadence gave me a Wonka gummy that the strand sold specifically for this movie and she told me to “have a wonderful Wonka weekend.” Overall, the movie can be good or just okay depending on someone’s preference.
