The mystery horror Halloween comedy Hubie Halloween directed by Steve Brill and co-written by Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler, who also is the main character, was released on Netflix on October 7, 2020. The cast consists of Adam Sandler as Hubie Dubois, Kevin James as Sgt. Steve Downey, Rob Schneider as Hubie’s friend Richie Hartman, and June Squibb as Hubie’s mother.
I would rate this movie a 7/10. I thought that this movie was a good Halloween movie for people who do not like horror films, but I thought it was a little cheesy. While the cast did a great job with their roles, I feel that the story line was a little all over the place. This is because the movie jumps from place to place introducing new characters and new events. The setting is in Salem, Massachusetts which adds to the spooky Halloween feel of the movie, which I really liked. I feel that if the movie followed a central storyline it would make more sense in the beginning and middle instead of it making sense in the end.
Adam Sandler did an excellent job with his role and making his character believable. While his character was bullied, he was the best character and the hero in the end. I liked how his character was perceived as too sweet and innocent for the tough world because it added a sense of pity and an emotional attachment. I feel that while he did a good job with the role it was not his best. Adam Sandler had been in many movies, and I find this was not his best performance, but I also do not feel it was horrible. It was kind of a throwback to the way he used to act in his earlier career, while I liked it and it made the character who the character was, I just was not sure it was the right fit for the character. I loved the outcast to hero dinamic, because while Hubie was underestimated and seen as an outcast he ended up saving the day and having the girl he wanted. Also the little romance between Hubie and Violet Valentine, and the history and connection they have with each other. While the movie was meant to be a Halloween comedy, I liked the added romance piece because it was different from other Halloween movies. This would be a great family movie night film, because it is kid appropriate and while it is funny it had a little element of suspense.
