Students discuss summer jobs
May 5, 2023
Once students enter high school most will get their first job. Most of the time that is working with fast food or getting involved in a family business. It can be a great lesson of responsibility, work ethic, and preparation for careers in the future. It is common for students to choose a summer job to occupy the free time summer provides and also focus on school during the school year.
Hannah Ortiz, sophomore at HAHS, worked as a lifeguard at the Shoey pool in Shoemakersville, PA last year during the summer, and she plans to continue that for the summer of 2023. Last year was her first year working as a lifeguard at the pool. Her first day of work last year was May 28 and she ended work for the season in September 2022. She will have a similar start and stop time this season. Hannah plans to continue her employment at the Shoey pool for two more years. During the summer, she works six to seven days a week or approximately 48 hours. Hannah enjoys the job and regarding her coworkers she states, “It’s kind of fun once everyone warms up to each other and it’s nice to work with them.” Hannah says she works for money and experience. She has always loved helping people and she feels that lifeguarding is a great way for her to do that. Hannah wants to emphasize that, “It’s a great place to work and a fun environment to be in. You should definitely come and work here.”
Another sophomore at HAHS, Kirra Goetz, got her first job on October 8, 2022, at Ritas in Hamburg. She is not sure at this time how long she would like to work there, but she is enjoying her time there now. Her duties on the job can vary, but she typically works three days a week. Sometimes she dreads going into work, but she says when she gets there, she enjoys it. Kirra feels she should have at least one job before she finishes high school for the experience and money is a nice bonus to that.
Getting a job over the summer is a very rewarding experience. It can allow for students to learn very important skills that are necessary for their entire life. A summer job can allow for learning time and money management as well as teamwork skills, following directions, and responsibility.
