Juniors experience a speakeasy
April 27, 2023
Every year, Mr. Kline organizes a speakeasy tole play event for his students where they can dress up as a character from the 1920s, enjoy snacks, and listen to music provided by the band. This year was no different and received much attention and participation from the students in their 1920s attire. The Speakeasy is a very anticipated event and students look forward to the fun roleplay and experiencing a simulation of that time period. To see the process that made the amusing party possible, Mr. Kline shared his thoughts and what originates the event.
The speakeasy is fun and very enjoyable, but there is a learning aspect to the party. Mr. Kline shared, “We go over the social movements of the 20s and I want them to learn more about their character and what life was like during the 1920s. It’s more individual learning.” The students are able to choose what character they want to cosplay. Some go above and beyond in portraying their personality. The goal is to engage students in learning about history and that time period while being entertained.
While the speakeasy is an annual tradition, a new, exciting element was added to the speakeasy this year. A murder occured and no one knew the killer. Mr. Kline shared, “I liked the costumes and I liked the addition of the murder mystery. It gave the kids something to do while they were there.” Students were able to engage with other characters and teachers and attempt to figure out the suspect. Mr. Kline shared his thought process behind the new addition. “I just watched Glass Onion and thought the murder mystery and the speakeasy could combine.” showing how inspiration could spark from topics unrelated to the event.
Mr. Kline has been holding the speakeasy since he started AP in 2017, six years. Every year it is something students and staff can look forward to and have a good time.
