NHS students collect books for Hamburg students

The National Honor Society is running a book drive to support Hamburg’s elementary schools and the Hamburg Public Library. From March 1 to March 15, the group will be collecting new and gently used books for all ages as one of their spring service projects and to help younger grades celebrate Read Across America Day.

The National Honor Society aims to support the community in a variety of ways. “We were going to do a toy and book drive for Christmas but never got it past the idea stage. When we were looking for a service project in March, we knew that Read Across America Day is March second so we came back to the idea of a book drive,” says NHS advisor Mrs. Bucheit. This fundraiser is to help promote reading to younger children just starting their education journeys. “We contacted the principals at both elementary schools and the middle school to ask them if they would like any age-appropriate books to distribute. They all said yes.” In May, the Hamburg Public Library is holding a book sale, so additional proceeds will be sent there.

The National Honor Society hopes to make this another successful service project, just like the pet food drive held earlier in the school year. “I hope to collect several hundred books to donate.  We are taking gently used books for all ages.  I personally hope that we get a lot of books for elementary or middle school age students.  It would be nice for NHS to help foster a love of reading for the younger students within our district by providing them with books,” says Mrs. Bucheit.

“The elementary school principals seemed really happy about it and we don’t want to let them down,” says NHS vice president Jacob Engel. In order to promote this project even further, NHS will enter any person who donates into a raffle for a 25 dollar gift card to a local business of their choice. The collection ends March 15, so be sureto drop off donations at Mrs. Bucheit’s room for a chance to win.
