Wellness teacher recommendations for healthy life

LeeAnn Mills

The oldest person to ever live was 122 years of age, but with a simple Google search, anyone can see that the average life expectancy is 72 years of age. In the United States, anyone who makes it past the age of 100 is named a centenarian, and as of 2021, there are around 97,000 centenarians living in this country.

To live a long life, a person must first take care of themselves. HAHS has a health program that every student is required to take and is taught by three different Wellness teachers. All of the units cover a theme related to healthy living and prolonged living. They are the experts on a healthy lifestyle and had some tips to share. Mr. Reinhard said teenagers and young adults should get 150 minutes of moderately intense physical exercise a week which should include muscle-building exercises. Everyone should also strive to avoid substance use at all costs, at every age, and finally, both teens and young adults should try to get eight hours of sleep.

Riley Mohn, a freshman, says she thinks these healthy living tips are very achievable. For exercise, she would split the time into sections and try different exercises on different days. Riley also believes substance abuse is very bad and agrees that it should be avoided at any opportunity. However, when it comes to sleep, Riley starts to differ from Mr. Reinhard. She acknowledges that eight hours of sleep is beneficial and achievable for some people, but not all. Riley said that she cannot command herself to sleep in the blink of an eye and therefore eight hours is a little far-fetched.

Becoming a centenarian is not for everyone! Throughout life, changes occur, problems arise, and people fulfill their dreams. To some individuals, their goals consist of seeing the world, doing risky activities, and experiencing new thrills, and to others, they wish to learn more, have a family, and share love. Long life means nothing if people don’t enjoy it.
