An allergy is when the immune system reacts to a forgein substance called an allergen. There are no set cures for allergies and they can be brought onto any person. Seasonal allergies are the most common types of allergies. “Seasonal allergies are super common for people, since pretty much anyone has them,” said Izzy Forte. The symptoms to most allergies are runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, or being breathless.

A lot of these allergies have increased over the years. In the US alone, food allergies have increased double of what they were originally in previous years. In addition to that, it is said that over 32 million people in the US have at least one food allergy or some form of an allergy. HAHS Nurse Mrs. Long states, “There are some people who have environmental allergies whether that being it is seasonal, tree, pollen, molds, and there are some people who are allergic to things that contain gluten, dairy or even nuts.” Some symptoms are not usually as bad, and some people may react differently to allergies. “I have allergies, when I get them it depends on ow bad they are, if they are mild I usually wait them out. If they are bad usually I cannot breathe and my eyes are swollen to where I cannot see,” said Sophmore Izzy Forte.

When it comes to attempting to cure these allergies, it is not easy. Things that can help them is medication such as Flonase which is basically a spray that goes up a persons nose 2-3 sprays per nostril. Flonase can help with stuffiness, congestion, and allergies.

Not all allergies or allergy reactions are bad in a way, but they can be very dangerous. “For students with a peanut allergy, they may need to use an Epipen or take Benadryl,” stated Mrs. Long. Benadryl is used for treating insect bites, poison ivy and such. Epipen’s are used for an emergency allergic reactions. “When having allergies, I usually take medicine to cure it,” stated Sophmore Izzy Forte.
