HAHS takes on pickleball

In the year of 2022-23, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Deitz started the first pickleball club that meets on club day A. No one really ever knew about pickleball, nor did they want to learn to play the sport. Pickleball is almost a bigger form of ping pong on half a tennis court, as Erica Gerner, sophomore says, “Pickleball is basically like a large form of ping pong and some tennis.” Most kids in the school must have been interested in playing, because within one day, all of the sign-up slots were full. Having an active club will also wake students up that morning to get one ready for the whole day to come.

Joe Martin said “I signed up because I love tennis, and I thought it would be fun,” showing the fact that pickleball and tennis are very similar sports yet different at the same time. Some tennis courts will have pickleball lines on them so someone can play pickleball and tennis on the same court. Erica Gerner said she signed up for pickleball because she “can hangout with my friends and do something fun,” highlighting the two different perspectives on why people had decided to sign up for the pickleball club.

Pickleball had just recently become a rapidly growing sport for people to play. Joe Martin thinks it is because “it is an easy, fun and welcoming sport. But it is also a sport anybody can play no matter who you are,” demonstrating that all ages can play pickleball. That is what makes it a lifelong sport, so when all ages are starting to play the sport, it seems as if it is growing rapidly each day. Since tennis is more physically demanding than pickleball, most older people will eventually decide to just play pickleball to where it keeps them active while not having to overdo it.

Overall, pickleball has grown today exponentially and still continues to grow everyday. Introducing pickleball to high school students could make each student go out of their comfort zone, to where it could be one sport someone loves. Pickleball is a great sport to try, and is recommended for all ages!
